Through his non-violent actions and inspiring thoughts, years after his death we continue to identify with him and adopt in different countries some of the non-violent strategies he put into practice. Could the Gandhi model help us to break the vicious circle of power conflict?

Me and the Gandhi model

The first thing that inspires me is to use love as a weapon. While the British sowed hatred between Muslims and Hindus to divide them, Gandhi had invited the two communities to show love for each other. This is further demonstrated in Gandhi’s quote “An eye for an eye ends up making the whole world blind”. The love that the two communities agreed to show has put an end to the division between them created by the British. This fact shows us the evidence of the power of love in this process of changing the world to a better place where we wish to live.

Another factor that has changed my life is taking other people’s problems as our own: this is achieved by taking the time to listen to others and to share with them. Gandhi lived with people by not trying to rise above them. By living like others he was able to understand how others feel and this allowed him to consider solutions to the real problems facing his society.

My country and Gandhi: Importing a model of life

Among several lessons learned from Gandhi’s life, one that I find important to adopt in my country is to learn to “be a servant of others”. In my country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, this kind of discourse is common in political parties and at many levels of leadership. Here, it is not just a matter of throwing or just saying that I am a servant, but of applying it to get closer to the ideal society as said by the Greek Platon.

Serving sincerely is an act of love that has a direct impact on the lives of the people who trust us and gives us responsibilities. By serving others with love, we inspire them to do the same and we aspire more confidently to develop what I call the patriotic soul, a strong feeling, an enormous pride in belonging to a country that cares.

I agree with Mahatma Gandhi who says “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. By embodying the image of a servant leader myself, I am perhaps even without realizing it, inspiring others to do the same. In a country where everyone sees only their own interests, the authorities once elected by the people no longer work for the interest of the people but for their own interests and their respective families. The will to serve others has disappeared and even the young people who currently complain about this way of doing things, once they have access to the treasures of the country, out of fear of tomorrow, are taking advantage of them. This is the vicious circle of underdevelopment that causes power conflicts.

Inspired by the model of Gandhi, who was a servant of others, let us be the change we want to see, let us serve others in the same way we want to be served so that we can change the world.

For years Gandhi has been an inspiration to thousands of people.
